Frequently Asked Questions
Are sessions confidential?
All concerns discussed in the course of therapy are confidential with the exception described below. Breen Counselling abides by the ethical principles of confidentiality as set out by the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC). This means that information concerning your treatment or evaluation may be released only with your consent with the exception required by law. The law requires the release of confidential information under these conditions: suspected abuse or neglect of a child, risk of serious harm to self or other, subpoena by the courts, and for the purposes of supervision. In these situations it is my duty as a therapist to notify the appropriate authorities and individuals. I will discuss any release of confidential information under these circumstances with you.

How long does the counselling process last?
This can be different for each individual, and will be discussed with the therapist upon the initial meeting. Breen Counselling uses a variety of different therapeutic approaches in order to meet the needs of all clients. The counselling process ranges from short term therapy (6+ sessions) to long term therapy (dependent on the individual’s goals)
Does my child have to consent to counselling services if I want to bring them for counselling?
The likelihood is that the therapy process is rarely effective if the client does not consent to services. The age and stage of development will depend on if consent is required from your child, or if it is required from your child and guardian(s). Often, if you can have your child agree to attending one session, this will provide them with more information to make the decision as to whether or not they consent to attending.
Do both guardians have to consent to the counselling process for my child?
Generally both parents are guardians, and most of the time make joint decisions regarding their child. If this is not the case, there may be a court order to outline which parent/guardian has final decision making. If you are going through a separation or divorce, or are already separated and you would like more information on what is required for consent, this can be discussed in detail during the initial session.
Can I see a counsellor at Breen Counselling for issues or challenges related to an ICBC Claim?
Yes, the counsellor you meet with can explain the payment process.
Does Breen Counselling offer a sliding payment scale?
We do not offer a sliding scale, however, beginning in early 2020, we will be offering sessions with a supervised Master’s of Counselling intern for a lesser rate of $55/50 minute session.
